I discovered in the course of doing these investigations that some, but not all, software operations appear to remove geo-metadata from image files.
Mac Mail, for example retains the geo-metadata when I emailed a JPEG photo at “Actual Size”, but strips it when I use any of the three resizing options. Does Apple consider this a privacy protection feature?
Mac Preview appears not to strip the geo-metadata when I re-sized and saved an image.
WordPress has problems. I wanted to post the photo whose metadata I analyzed in How iPhone 5 Geo-Tags Photos. I could not add the photo, then simulate a reader grabbing it, without losing the geo-metadata.
Test the handling of geo-metadata in your workflow before committing to it.
